...........Cycling in the Inner West, Rides, Tours, Advocacy
Sunday the 4th May, a peaceful amble to Garden Island with a tour, courtesy of Robert Dunn. Meet at Bar Italia, Norton St Leichhardt to leave by 8:15 AM. You must bring photo ID (drivers licence, ID card, passport) to be part of the tour. Garden Island is a secure defence facility.
This is an easy ride, with only a couple of twists. We head out through the grounds of Sydney University, through the back streets of Redfern to pick up the Bourke St cycleway.
The cycleway takes us past terrace houses, past East Sydney Technical College, near to the Sydney Jewish Museum (free first Sunday of the month, but we are doing the Garden Island tour).
From there we will ride along the other side of Walsh Bay. A short flight of steps will take us to the road leading past the Botanic Gardens and down to Mrs Macquaries chair. Stunning views of the harbour.
Although we can't cycle in the Botanic Gardens, we'll go through the Domain to Macquarie St and then go up along the Cahill combined cycleway and path. If you've never been up there, you are in for a real treat.
Another set of stairs at the end to negotiate, then through the Argyle subway to join the Kent St cycleway, cross Pyrmont and Anzac bridges, then back to Bar Italia.
I would expect to be back by early afternoon, 1:30 at the very latest, but more likely 12:30 unless the tour is very comprehensive.
All in all, a great way to see the sights of Sydney using one of the most practical ways to get around.
See you there!
