For Ride Leaders
The Sign On Form for Rides is here. Ride Leaders should download the file (word.doc) and print it out. It is two sided, with a form for Temporary members on the back. If you don't have a printer (or access to one, such as at your local Library)let us know.
All riders should be asked to sign on, with a contact number of a relative etc in case of an accident, or for follow up. Temporary members are members for the duration of the ride. They can join as full members by paying the fee and filling in the application form or providing details. A ride leader can approve on the spot.
The Risk Warning on the Sign On form should be pointed out to riders and, more importantly, riders should be advised of any known hazards along the route, such as a steep descent or a rough section, or a road crossing of a busy highway. You can't cover every eventuality, but it is a good idea to mention the main dangers or problems.
It is a good idea to tell riders that they should obey the traffic rules, wear a helmet, and ask them to keep behind the leader. New riders may need some further instruction on how to ride safely. Also ask them to advise the leader if they are leaving the ride.
Ride Leaders should be members of BNSW and BL to be covered for claims arising from the ride, such as for negligence or a Public Liability claim. See further on this here and here on BicycleNSW web site
Riders do not have to be members of BNSW but should be encouraged to join, particularly if they are regular riders. If they join BNSW they will be covered for personal injury and damage or injury to third parties. If they aren't members of BNSW they are not covered for injury or damage.
Riders and Ride Leaders may also have some Public Liability or damage/loss cover under their own Household Insurance (sounds strange but it is true for some Insurance policies). They should check their policies as it varies.
Casual riders (one or two rides a year) do not have to be members of BL, but should be encouraged to join if they are regular riders. It is $10 to join, and $10 renewal every year (payable in Jan or Feb). Payments can be made to ride leaders or directly into our bank account. See Note on BL bank account.
