Bike Leichhardt Tours

Over the years Bike Leichhart/LBUG has done some great touring rides. The highlight is probably our trip to NZ in 2005 (followed by the Great Darling Mud Rescue of 2011). We cycled for two weeks around the South Island, from Lake Tekapo to Greymouth, via Queenstown and Wanaka. In 2015 we went back to NZ for a north Island tour from Rotarua to Welington and then a two week tour of east coast Tasmania.We have done a 4 day tour around NE Victoria and many 2 and 3 day weekend rides around places a little closer to Sydney, like Bathurst, Orange, Goulburn, Hunter, Mudgee, Bylong, Braidwood, South Coast. Some members have toured in USA and Europe. If interested in touring, let us know and you will be included in news about tours and you can also get involved in planning and finding good places to tour.

Feel free to start a discussion in the Forum below if you have any questions or suggestions

For some tips on how to get started with touring, see page Touring on a Bicycle, link is in centre column.

Jamie Honan has written a blog on touring called Rigs.

Just found out that the Husky Ferry is running on weekends. This makes a ride to Huskisson on Jervis Bay more interesting, as you can come back a different way. I.E., go via Nowra airport highway to Husky turnoff, come back via ferry and Callala Beach.

Next LBUG tour is on 27 Dec. A 4 day tour from Mudgee to Cassilis and back. Still room for a couple more. If interested contact Heather Manning. See under Contacts for number, or check the email list on Yahoo.

Bob,
A couple of us older citizens have looked at your ride details would like to make a couple of suggestions relating to rest days and sightseeing. Based on travelling by train, with return Explorer from Broken Hill (only Tuesdays-assuming you want to avoid the 3 am bus daily departure/13 hour bus trip to Dubbo) we suggest that the party starts from Bourke a couple of days earlier. This would leave :
1) a rest/recoup/washing day in say Wilcannia, older persons need this rest!
2) a day sightseeing in Broken Hill. (I may never get back there again)
With time to catch the train home.

Have added some photos of the Orange tour. Day one was Newbridge to Orange, via Blayney and Byng. Byng was the site of a village of up to 600 people in the 1800's, many from Cornwall. Byng was naamed after a british admiral who was court-martialled and shot in 1757! He became a popular figure. Only an old church and a few houses left now. We missed seeing an historic old homestead in Bookannon Lane, so will have to return. There were some steep hills on the Icely Rd into Orange that tested people's character!

Day 2 was cold and wet, as those that went to Molong found. Orange wineries tour was the better bet.

Day 3, back to Newbridge via Milthorpe was dry but cold. The tailwind helped. We did a diversion via Brown's Creek.

Next tour is on the Anzac Weekend- two or three day options. Bathurst -Orange area. See Events. Contact Heather or Grant to put your name down. Book now to avoid disappointment, and to make it easy for the organizers;}

The Wingello to Goulburn weekend tour had 17 starters, a pretty good turn out. Mike took some photos, which are on the Photo page. Was a little grey and drizzly, but I hope everyone enjoyed it. Next tour scheduled is towards the end of March, to Nelson Bay from Newcastle. Keep an eye out for details. If interested, join the touring group and put your name down.
