There is a plan to relocate the Kogarah Golf course on the Cooks River opposite the airport to the public land south of the M5, so they can develop the existing course for housing. This will affect the bike path we often use through the area, from Marsh St through to Bestic St, which goes under the M5 and along Muddy Ck to Bestic St and then on to Brighton.
There is a huge DA about it on the Bayside Council website (DA-2017/179) and lots of objections already. Bicycle NSw has made an objection, as has IWBC
and Bikeast. The National Trust also slammed it
Main objection from us, apart from the shonky nature of the whole deal (recently exposed in the SMH
), is the lack of a clear proposal to provide a much better regional cycle path from Marsh St to Bestic St, including a direct link along Cooks River frontage, avoiding Marsh St, where the golf course is now. Also, during construction of the new golf course, we are seeking a commitment to a high quality detour, not the usual rough track. As BNSW says this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put a major bike link in to the south.
